- The Exploration stream of the NFRF program supports high risk, high reward and interdisciplinary research that is not easily supported through funding opportunities currently offered by the three agencies. It seeks to inspire projects that bring disciplines together beyond traditional disciplinary or common interdisciplinary approaches by research teams with the capacity to explore something new, which might fail but has the potential for significant impact. Exploration grants aim to have a variety of types of impacts, some of which might be social, economic, scientific, artistic or cultural. This is not an exhaustive list; other types of impacts are also recognized.

- Le volet Exploration du fonds Nouvelles frontières en recherche appuie la recherche interdisciplinaire à haut risque et à haut rendement peu susceptible d’être financée dans le cadre des autres programmes des trois organismes fédéraux de financement de la recherche. Il vise à susciter la réalisation de projets qui réunissent diverses disciplines, au-delà des approches disciplinaires ou multidisciplinaires traditionnelles, par des équipes de recherche capables d’explorer l’inédit et dont les travaux, malgré leur potentiel d'échec, pourraient avoir des répercussions considérables. Les subventions au titre du volet Exploration appuient des projets aux incidences diverses, notamment sur le plan social, économique, scientifique, artistique ou culturel. Cette liste n’est pas exhaustive, et les projets qui pourraient avoir d’autres types d’incidences sont également soutenus.
